Honors

December 2010: ABLE Families is named a national “Promise Place” by America’s Promise Alliance.  The honor comes in recognition of our effective committment to fulfill all of the Five Promises young people need (caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education, and opportunities to help others) in order to grow up well prepared for a happy and successful life.

November 2010: ABLE Families’ Education Coordinator Molly Lueken is named 2010 Tutor of the Year by Literacy West Virginia.

May 2010: ABLE Families is featured in The State Journal‘s special supplement highlighting “55 Good Things about West Virginia.”

2009: ABLE Families founding director Sr. Janet Peterworth is named a ‘Hometown Hero’ by WSAZ NewsChannel3.

2009: Sr Janet receives the Jefferson Award for Public Service.

2008: Sr Janet recieves the Champion for Children award by the Team for West Virginia’s Children.

November 2006:  ABLE Families is recognized by the WV Prevention Resource Center as an organization for “dedication and commitment to strengthening your community and making a difference in West Virginia.” 

2005: ABLE Families receives the the Hovah H. Underwood award for Excellence in Serving Children by Mission West Virginia.

2005: Sr Janet honored as Humanitarian of the Year by the organizers of the King Coal Festival in Williamson, WV.

2003: Save the Children honors ABLE Families’ Supper in a Sack nutrition program as a Promising Practice at a Washington, DC, event.

October 2003: For a second time, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College honors ABLE Families as an Outstanding Education Partner. 

April 2001:  The West Virginia Governor’s Council on Literacy names ABLE Families an Outstanding Adult Literacy Program. 

October 2000: Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College honors ABLE Families as an Outstanding Education Partner.
