Announcing: A Reading Celebration!

ABLE Families announces a very special event for parents of young children in northern Mingo County.  A Reading Celebration, to be held Monday, November 22, will be an evening for parents to learn about reading with and to their kids.

Sounds simple, I know, but we believe it’s a highly underestimated parent-child activity.  Reading with your children is a great way to spend quality time that is both enjoyable to them and good for them.

Our special guest for the evening will be Nancy Kelly Allen, a prolific author of some excellent books — some for kids, and some for adults.  Nancy will be talking with parents about why reading with your kids is important and offering ideas about how parents can make the activity both more fun and more enriching than they might ever have thought.

This Reading Celebration will take place in our Afterschool building, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.  Refeshments will be served, and every parent who attends will get, as a gift from ABLE Families, a free copy of Nancy’s book Read to Me! I Will Listen: Tips Mom and Dad Can Use to Help Me Become a Lifelong Reader.

This event is open to the public, but we’re especially inviting all parents who participate in MIHOW, our in-home family education program.  We wanted to do something special for them, to nourish and encourage them in their important role as parents.

More good news — Since she will be in town, Nancy has also agreed to stop by our Afterschool program.  She’ll be spending time with the kids who attend, doing some read-aloud and talking about the joys of reading and telling stories.  ABLE Families will provide a copy of one of Nancy’s great children’s books to every one of our Afterschool kids (and Nancy will be happy to sign them every one of them!).

We’re thrilled to be able to present this wonderful opportunity to Kermit area families.
