Major children’s lit awards announced

One week ago, the American Library Association announced a whole slew of prestigious book awards, including the most well-known, the John Newbery Medal and the Caldecott Medal

The Newbery Medal, awarded annually to the top children’s book of the year, was awarded this year to When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead.

The Caldecott Medal, the top annual prize for picture books, went to The Lion & The Mouse, by Jerry Pinkney.

Several other important awards for excellence in children’s literature were presented at the same time.  They’re all listed here

We’ve ordered copies of the Stead and Pinkney books, as well as several other titles on that awards list, for our Afterschool room.  (Amazon.com is offering some excellent bargains on them.)  That will make them available to many local kids who would otherwise never have a chance to look inside their covers.  (Interested in covering the purchase of any or all of the other books on the awards list for the ABLE Families Afterschool kids?  Drop me a line.)
